In 1896, a seed was planted. This seed was Canada’s first Talmud Torah school, the precursor to what we now know as Herzliah High School. Herzliah High School stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Jewish education. Originally located on Cadieux Street, the school quickly blossomed, outgrowing its humble beginnings. It moved to larger premises on de la Gauchetière Street. This growth was a sign of the community’s thirst for knowledge and tradition.

Herzliah High School, a part of the United Talmud Torahs of Montreal, is more than just bricks and mortar. It represents generations of students who have walked its halls. It’s a place where curiosity is sparked and community is fostered. The school’s history is intertwined with the history of Montreal’s Jewish community. It has weathered storms, both literal and figurative. In 2004, the Beutel campus library suffered a devastating arson attack. This act of hate, intended to silence and destroy, ultimately strengthened the school’s resolve. The library was rebuilt, thanks to the outpouring of support from around the world. It was renamed the Azrieli Library, a symbol of resilience and hope.

Herzliah High School has always adapted to the changing needs of its students and the community. The school consolidated its campuses in 2011. It brought together students and faculty under one roof at the Snowdon location. In 2018, Herzliah moved to a state-of-the-art campus on Mountain Sights Avenue. This new campus, named after philanthropist Sylvan Adams, stands as a beacon of modern Jewish education.

Herzliah has a rich athletic program. Students compete in a variety of sports, from basketball and soccer to swimming and track and field. The school also has a strong focus on academics. It consistently ranks among the top high schools in Quebec. Herzliah High School has produced notable alumni. They have made significant contributions in fields ranging from law and politics to literature and the arts. Names like Leonard Cohen, Irwin Cotler, and Charles Krauthammer resonate with the school’s legacy of excellence.

Herzliah High School is more than just a school. It’s a living testament to the power of education, community, and resilience. It’s a place where history is made, traditions are honored, and future leaders are nurtured. As you stand before Herzliah High School, take a moment to appreciate its journey. Consider the countless lives that have been shaped within its walls.
