Nestled on the edge of Heidelberg’s Weststadt in Kirchheim, you’ll find the Mörgelgewann. This unique neighborhood has a story to tell. Mörgelgewann isn’t your typical picturesque German neighborhood. It began as a refuge. After the Second World War, Mörgelgewann provided much-needed housing for refugees displaced by the conflict. Later, the city of Heidelberg repurposed it to house the homeless. Today, Mörgelgewann is home to around 300 people. The Caritas Association has been working here since 1974, running a community project within Mörgelgewann. They operate a supervised playgroup for toddlers, a special needs-focused after-school program for children, and youth and adult social work programs. They even had a visit from garden expert Heike Boomgaarden who worked on a project with some of the children. The Landfried Foundation is also involved. They’re working on a program with developmental psychologist Professor Dr. Sabina Pauen. This project aims to empower the residents of Mörgelgewann. They focus on developing self-reliance and the ability to make independent decisions. It’s a story of resilience and community spirit, a place where people work together to overcome challenges. Mörgelgewann stands as a testament to Heidelberg’s commitment to providing for its most vulnerable citizens. It also highlights the power of community support.
