In the heart of Vila do Conde, Portugal, lies Rio Mau e Arcos. This civil parish whispers tales of ancient settlements and a rich, layered past. Rio Mau e Arcos wasn’t always one entity. It was formed in 2013 by merging the parishes of Rio Mau and Arcos. This union brought together a population of 2,681 people spread across 15.7 square kilometers. Imagine stepping back in time to before this merger. Rio Mau and Arcos existed independently, each contributing its own unique threads to the tapestry of history. Within Rio Mau e Arcos are architectural gems like the Igreja de São Cristovão de Rio Mau and the Ponte de São Miguel de Arcos. The Ponte de São Miguel de Arcos, also known as just the “Ponte de Arcos,” is a captivating Romanesque-style bridge. Its three perfectly rounded arches hint at a late medieval construction. Some believe it may have replaced an even older bridge, the one that possibly gave Arcos its name. An intriguing inscription reading “1144” graces one of the bridge’s guard stones. While seemingly ancient, this inscription isn’t from the original construction and lacks documented evidence. However, the possibility remains that the present bridge incorporates remnants of earlier structures, whispering echoes of the past into the present. Rio Mau e Arcos invites you to explore its hidden depths and uncover the stories woven into its very fabric. The parish holds two identified Castro settlements, a testament to its historical significance. One of these is the Castro de Argifonso, referenced in a document as far back as 985 AD. This ancient settlement, located on the Alto do Castelo or dos Caramouchos, adds another layer of intrigue to Rio Mau e Arcos’s rich history.
