Can you imagine a plane nicknamed “Gooney Bird”? Here at Joint Base Charleston, stands our Douglas C-47B Skytrain. This isn’t just any old aircraft. It’s a symbol of courage, a relic of a time when the world held its breath. This Douglas C-47B Skytrain, a proud veteran of the skies, stands as a tribute to its brethren and the brave souls who flew them. Originally designed as a commercial airliner, the DC-3, the C-47 became a workhorse of World War II. Our Douglas C-47B Skytrain embodies the spirit of the “Chattanooga Choo Choo”. This original C-47, assigned to the 83rd Troop Carrier Squadron, flew daring missions. Tragically, it was lost in Burma on October 22, 1944. Our Douglas C-47B Skytrain proudly bears this name and paint scheme. It carries the memory of those lost. It embodies the resilience and dedication of the 437th Troop Carrier Group. This group, a direct ancestor of the current 437th Operations Group here at Joint Base Charleston, played a vital role in D-Day. One of their squadrons, the 85th Troop Carrier Squadron, led the charge on June 6, 1944. They towed gliders filled with the 101st Airborne Division and their equipment. They flew the C-47s into the heart of the storm, paving the way for victory. The Douglas C-47B Skytrain was dedicated to Charleston Air Force Base in August 1982. It is a touchstone to the past, a reminder of the sacrifices made. It’s a link to the legacy of the men and women who served. It’s a testament to the enduring power of duty, honor, and country.
