Originally a German community, Live Oak emerged from gently rolling hills. The city founders saw the Interstate 35 and Loop 1604 interchange as a perfect location. Live Oak has a story that began long before it was incorporated in 1960.
Live Oak transitioned from farming and ranching to peaceful residential neighborhoods. Shopping centers, a major hospital, medical complexes, college campuses, and financial resources also appeared. It’s a rich transformation.
The area’s initial 316 inhabitants chose the name “Live Oak”. This name reflects the importance of the live oak tree in their lives. When the first U.S. Census was taken after the city’s incorporation in 1970, Live Oak had 2779 residents.
By September 30, 2007, the city covered about 5.5 square miles with roughly 12000 people. In 2017, Live Oak was estimated to have 15395 residents. There were a total of 6450 housing units.
Today, Live Oak provides core municipal services. These include public safety, police and fire protection, solid waste management, and public utilities like water and wastewater.
According to the 2020 census, the population reached 15781. There were 6135 households and 3940 families. The population density was 3468.36 per square mile.
Live Oak’s demographics show a diverse community. As of 2020, 36.09% were White, 13.07% Black or African American, and 41.0% Hispanic or Latino. Other groups include Asian, Native American, and Pacific Islander.
The climate here brings hot, humid summers and mild to cool winters. Live Oak is classified as humid subtropical on climate maps. It offers residents a mix of seasonal weather patterns.
Education in Live Oak falls under two school districts. These are Judson Independent School District and North East Independent School District. This ensures comprehensive educational opportunities for the city’s youth.
