Craving a perfectly poured beer in a place steeped in Madrid’s tavern culture? Then you have come to the right place. This is El Doble.

Founded in 1987 El Doble stands as one of Madrid’s best breweries. For almost 40 years El Doble has been serving beers. Not just any beers but expertly poured ones.

Its name El Doble is quite relevant. Legend says that this bar serves the best doble in Madrid. A “doble” is the bigger brother of the caña. It’s a generous 330ml. Many locals come here to have some beers. They do it before heading out to a disco. El Doble might also be one of their stops on a night bar-hopping tour. So there is a lot of movement.

The look of El Doble is already mythical. It features tiles so characteristic of its facade. You can also see photographs of famous people who visit cover its walls. There is a huge marble bar with taps in the front row. It is always full of people. Yes it is one of those essential Madrid destinations.

Inside El Doble prepare for bright lights. Old bars in Spain tend to have bright lights. They use LED. So forget about enjoying an elegant ambience in this place. This bar has so much light I would even recommend using sunglasses.

The staff is a key feature in this type of bar. The old men basically live in the bar. They seem to never have a break. If you get to be friends with one of them you’ll be sure your new best friend will be there waiting for you. No matter the day.

The address is Calle de José Abascal 16. El Doble sits close to the ones in Calle Ponzano. It is larger in size. The Gastroranking score is 4.07.

The food is also a strong feature of El Doble. But it’s a bit expensive for a Spanish wallet. If your wallet can handle it they have a lot of fresh seafood and alternatives. The menu at El Doble consists of seafood conserves and sausages. There are also portions from octopus to whitebait.

El Doble opens from Tuesday to Sunday. The opening times are from 12 to 4 pm and from 7 pm to midnight. On Mondays it remains closed.

To get to El Doble you can drive your own vehicle. However traffic in Madrid tends to be dense. There is a risk of not being able to enjoy its mythical dobles. Public transport is a great alternative.
