On June 24 1959 a momentous occasion unfolded. The Hospital Sâo João de Deus officially opened its doors. This wasn’t just another hospital. It was a beacon of hope a symbol of progress. It marked a pivotal moment in Porto’s medical history.
The Hospital Sâo João de Deus wasn’t built overnight. Its roots stretch back much further. In 1825 King John VI established the Royal School of Surgery in Porto. This school laid the foundation for medical excellence in the city. It later evolved into the Medico-Surgical School of Porto. This school finally became the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto. This happened in 1911. The groundwork for the magnificent hospital we see today had been laid.
Following a significant political shift in 1933 the construction of two large teaching hospitals began. One in Lisbon and the other in Porto. The Hospital Sâo João de Deus was a direct outcome of that ambitious vision. The hospital’s design was entrusted to the architect Hermann Distel. His design was forward-thinking and functional. The hospital’s inauguration was a grand event. The then Head of State Admiral Américo Tomás presided over the ceremony. The entire Faculty of Medicine relocated to the new building. This consolidated medical education and research under one roof. Professor Hernâni Monteiro an esteemed anatomist and dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Porto delivered the inaugural lecture. This was in the new building on November 9 1959.
Today Hospital Sâo João de Deus continues its legacy. It stands as a testament to dedication. It serves the population of Porto and neighboring areas.
