Have you ever heard of a temple dedicated to the lotus flower? Nestled in the Higashiyama mountains of Kyoto, Japan, the Shoren-in Temple may not be dedicated to the lotus, but it holds a deep connection to the delicate flower. This temple is one of Kyoto’s “monzeki” temples, meaning its head priests were often members of the imperial family. As you stand before Shoren-in, imagine the year 1150. Emperor Toba, a devoted follower of the Tendai sect of Buddhism, wished for his son to study under the head priest of Enryakuji Temple. To accommodate them, he built Shoren-in as a city residence, a peaceful haven away from the bustling courts. Over time, this residence transformed into the revered Shoren-in Temple. Centuries later, fate took an unexpected turn. In the 18th century, a devastating fire swept through Kyoto, leaving Empress Go-Sakuramachi without a palace. Shoren-in, with its serene atmosphere and historical ties to the imperial family, became her temporary home. It’s said that the temple’s gardens, designed by masters like Soami and Enshu Kobori, were once graced by her presence. Though the empress’s time at Shoren-in was brief, the story adds a layer of intrigue to this already fascinating temple.
