Lost in the shadows of history. Here we stand before the Novodevichy Cemetery in Saint Petersburg. A place where the whispers of the past mingle with the rustling leaves of the present.

This isn’t just any cemetery. Novodevichy Cemetery holds a significant place in Saint Petersburg’s rich history. It opened in 1849 near the Moscow Triumphal Gate. Originally its prestige rivaled only the Tikhvin Cemetery at the Alexander Nevsky Monastery. Think of it as Saint Petersburg’s high society resting place. For much of the 19th century prominent figures were buried here.

Notable figures laid to rest within these hallowed grounds include the renowned poets Nikolay Nekrasov and Fyodor Tyutchev. Their words once echoed through the city’s vibrant salons. Now they rest in quiet repose here. The painter Mikhail Vrubel also found his final resting place. His vibrant canvases once adorned the walls of grand estates. His brushstrokes now rest silent. The architect Leonty Benois is buried here as well. His designs shaped the city’s skyline. Now he’s become part of the landscape himself. The legacy of composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. The genius who wrote countless iconic scores. The philologist Yakov Grot. His knowledge once illuminated countless minds. The publisher A F Marx. The chess player Mikhail Chigorin. Even the politician Vyacheslav Pleve and explorer Gennady Nevelskoi are among the many buried here.

The cemetery’s history isn’t without tragedy. During the Soviet era much devastation occurred. The cemetery church was demolished in 1929. Numerous tombs were destroyed. Many bodies were moved to the Tikhvin Cemetery. Yet even amidst such destruction. The spirit of Novodevichy Cemetery persisted. Restoration efforts in 1989 revived this important site.

Two churches stand as testaments to faith and resilience. The Church of the Icon of the Mother of God “Joy of All Who Sorrow” dates back to 1855-1856. It was erected in memory of Colonel A N Karamzin the son of famed historian Nikolai Karamzin. The Church of Elijah the Prophet built between 1883 and 1888 features five domes and is lined with glazed brick. It is the final resting place of merchant I F Gromov.

Novodevichy Cemetery may be smaller than its famous Moscow namesake. It still retains an undeniable charm. A place of quiet reflection. A place where the echoes of Saint Petersburg’s past whisper through the trees. Take a moment to appreciate the lives lived. The legacies left here in this hallowed ground. The stories of Novodevichy Cemetery. They continue to unfold in the heart of this great city.
