Could a church have two birthdays? The Moggill Uniting Church can. It’s a fascinating story that intertwines two structures, two congregations, and over 150 years of faith. Today, we stand before the Moggill Uniting Church, a modern structure completed in 1979. But the spirit of this church dates back much further. The first service held in Moggill took place in December 1856 in the home of Mr. T. Makepeace. Imagine early settlers gathering together, finding solace and community in shared prayer. For years, services continued in private homes and even Mr. Makepeace’s barn. It wasn’t until May 5, 1868, that the Moggill Wesleyan Methodists finally opened their first church, a charming Carpenter Gothic structure built on land entrusted to community trustees. This original church, a testament to the perseverance of the early settlers, still stands today, a treasured relic on the church grounds. It served the growing community, even undergoing an expansion in 1905. In 1941, thanks to a generous donation of £300 from local farmers Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Sinnamon, a hall was added, further solidifying the church’s role as a community hub. In 1977, the Moggill Methodist Church, like many others across Australia, joined the Uniting Church. The congregation then embarked on the construction of the new building we see before us. A plaque near the entrance commemorates the laying of the foundation stone on June 24, 1979. This modern building, dedicated to the Uniting Church in Australia, continues the tradition of service and community that began in a pioneer’s home so many years ago. In 2021, Moggill Uniting Church merged with Karana Downs Uniting Church to form Brisbane West Uniting Church. Both locations continue to thrive, hosting services and community events. The Moggill Uniting Church embodies the enduring spirit of faith and community. It is a place where history whispers from the walls of the old church and resonates in the vibrant life of the new.
