Beneath the shadow of the Fordham Manor Reformed Church, a silent testament to centuries of faith and resilience stands. The Fordham Manor Reformed Church has witnessed the ebb and flow of history, from its humble beginnings to its present-day glory. Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, in 1996, recognized the church’s significance. He declared October 20th “Fordham Manor Reformed Church 300th Anniversary Day”. This marked a milestone for a church whose roots trace back to 1696. Initially, the congregation gathered in homes. In 1706, their first church building arose in Devoe Park, opposite Andrews Avenue. This sanctuary, however, met a tragic end during the Revolutionary War, destroyed by the fires of conflict. The congregation, undeterred, rebuilt in 1802 near Kingsbridge Road. The Fordham Manor Reformed Church has seen three buildings on its current site since then. The second structure appeared in 1849, and the latest in 1940. Remarkably, the bell, cast in 1823, still rings out each Sunday, a resounding echo of the past. The church’s story intertwines with notable figures. Edgar Allan Poe, the master of macabre, and his wife, Virginia Clemm, were members of this very congregation. Their presence adds a touch of literary mystique to the Fordham Manor Reformed Church’s legacy. Even a local junior high school bears the name of John Peter Tetard, the church’s third minister. This further cements the church’s place in the community. Under Pastor Irving Rivera’s leadership, the Fordham Manor Reformed Church experienced a period of remarkable growth. The congregation expanded from a mere 13 members to a vibrant community of 300. Now, it encompasses three distinct congregations. Services are held in English, Spanish, and Korean, reflecting the rich diversity of the surrounding neighborhood. The church, located on Reservoir Avenue in the Bedford Park section of the Bronx, continues to serve as a beacon of faith and community. Its doors remain open, welcoming all who seek solace and inspiration within its historic walls.
