Beneath the Baldwin Hills sky, nestled between La Brea Avenue and Stocker Street, lies Norman O. Houston Park. It’s a relatively young park, but its story is deeply intertwined with the history of this vibrant community. Norman O. Houston Park wasn’t always its name. Originally, it was simply La Brea Park. The idea for this green space sparked in 1975. The City of Recreation and Parks Commission envisioned a community hub, pledging $1.85 million to bring it to life. Around 1981, the park opened its gates to the public. Then-City Councilwoman Pat Russell played a key role in shaping its future. She proposed naming the park after a remarkable figure, Norman O. Houston. Mayor Tom Bradley described Houston as a “Pioneer of Black Industry,” a testament to his impactful contributions. Houston’s legacy resonates deeply within Black Los Angeles. He co-founded and led Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company, a cornerstone of Black-owned businesses in South LA. The company’s original building, a stunning mission-revival style structure from 1928, still stands on Central Avenue. It’s a designated Los Angeles Cultural-Historic Monument. Sadly, Houston passed away in 1981, the same year the park was born. In 1982, La Brea Park was officially renamed Norman O. Houston Park, a fitting tribute to his enduring impact. The park continued to evolve. In 2014, a $2.5 million renovation breathed new life into the space. A revitalized walking path, modern workout equipment, a vibrant children’s play area, and lush landscaping enhanced the park’s appeal. Today, Norman O. Houston Park spans just under 10 acres. A nearly one-mile looping trail invites leisurely strolls and invigorating jogs. Amenities abound, from picnic tables beneath shady trees to a sprawling field perfect for gatherings. A basketball court echoes with the sounds of friendly competition. Even on a busy Saturday morning, the parking lot buzzes with activity. Visitors of all ages enjoy the park’s offerings, from families on morning strolls to fitness enthusiasts utilizing the exercise equipment. Many use Norman O. Houston Park as a gateway to the Stocker Corridor Trail. This trail winds around Stocker Street, connecting La Brea Avenue to Presidio Drive. Both the park and the trail are integral parts of the expansive 13-mile Park-to-Playa Trail Network. Norman O. Houston Park stands as a testament to the power of community vision and the enduring legacy of a remarkable individual. It’s a vibrant green space, a place of recreation, and a reminder of the rich history that shapes Baldwin Hills.
