Gazing upon Riedenburg, can you sense the echoes of centuries past? Riedenburg is more than just a Salzburg district. It’s a time capsule, layered with history from the Neolithic era to the present day. Riedenburg cradles the Rainberg, a hill continuously inhabited from 4500 BC to 15 AD. Imagine a bustling Celtic settlement thriving here, long before Salzburg as we know it existed. The very name “Riedenburg” whispers of this ancient past, meaning “fortified hill surrounded by reeds.”

Riedenburg’s story intertwines with the Almkanal, its two arms, the Müllner Arm and the Stiftsarm, shaping the district’s growth. The Müllner Arm, the older of the two, powered the mills of Mülln as the “Riedenburger Bach” since the early Middle Ages. Later, in 1335, the Bürgerspitalsarm was carved through the Mönchsberg, further defining Inner Riedenburg. The 17th century saw the gradual draining of the Riedenburg moor, transforming the landscape and opening up the area for development. In 1670, Michael Spingrueber acquired a significant portion of the valley, establishing the “Neureit” farm, later known as the “Ofenlochwirtshaus.”

The construction of the Sigmundstor (Neutor) between 1764 and 1767 connected Riedenburg to Salzburg’s Altstadt, ushering in a new era of development. Despite a few stately homes and gardens like the Späthof, Mölckhof, Lebitschhof, and the renowned Wolfegg-Garten, Riedenburg remained largely undeveloped until the mid-18th century. The arrival of the tramway in 1915-1916 further spurred its growth. The late 19th century saw the Baron-Löwenstern estates parceled out, leading to the development of the Gründerzeit villas and the street plan of 1886 that shaped much of Riedenburg’s current layout.

Today, Riedenburg is a blend of old and new. Inner Riedenburg, nestled between Rainberg and Mönchsberg, retains its historic charm with villas like those on Bucklreuthstrasse and the Rainbergkeller, the oldest documented house in the district. Äußere Riedenburg, once home to the Riedenburgkaserne (1736), has transformed into a modern residential area. Riedenburg St. Paul, centered around the Pfarrkirche St. Paul, includes newer developments like the Schliesselbergersiedlung, Lanserhofsiedlung, Rosittensiedlung, and Goriansiedlung.

Riedenburg’s southern border touches the serene landscape surrounding Schloss Leopoldskron and its tranquil lake. This area, known as the “Leopoldskroner Weiher,” was once the summer residence of Archbishop Leopold Anton Eleuterius von Firmian. This tranquil area, a protected landscape, includes the historic St. Peter-Weiher and the Villa-Berta-Teich, offering a peaceful escape from the city’s bustle. Riedenburg. A district steeped in history, a testament to Salzburg’s rich and layered past.
