“Why is this temple called Agasthiyar Temple when Lord Shiva is the main deity?” That’s a question many ask when they first visit. Let’s explore this unique temple in Chennai. The Agasthiyar Temple is near Pondy Bazaar in T Nagar. It is also known as Agastyar Ashram.

Though called Agasthiyar Temple, Lord Shiva is the presiding deity. He appears as a Shiv Linga named Vanibeshwarar. Unusually, idols of Shiva and Parvati stand behind the Shiv Linga. You can find a separate shrine for Goddess Vadivambikai. Her idol is incredibly beautiful.

No one knows exactly when the Agasthiyar Temple was built. The current structure is modern. However, it has been a popular temple in this area for many years.

As you enter Agasthiyar Temple, notice the tower. The shrine of Ganesha is called Nityananda Ganesha. He is with his consorts Siddhi and Buddhi. The walls around Ganesha are full of stucco images and sculptures. Look for rare figures like Ganesha on a peacock. See Ganesha fighting with Asuras. Spot Ganesha as a crow with Saint Agastya. The idol of Bhairav is near Ganesha’s shrine.

Lord Subramanya also has a separate shrine. He is with his consorts Valli and Devasena. The shrines for Agastya and his consort Lopamudra are nearby. Perhaps this is why it is called Agastya Ashram.

One unique feature in the Agasthiyar Temple is all nine Navagraha idols. Each planet has its own Vahana or vehicle.

Agasthiyar Temple has other shrines. These include Lakshmi Narayana and Kalyana Varadar. Kalyana Varadar’s shrine has bronze idols of Lakshmi and Ganesha. Also present are Dakshinamurti, Ayyappa, Nagaraja, Chakrathalwar and Narasimha. Do not miss Durga, Chandikeswara, Hanuman and the Utsav idols.

Another unique aspect of the Agasthiyar Temple is on its tower. You can see figures of national and spiritual leaders. These include Variyar, Bharatiar and VOC.

It is believed that Agastiyar worshiped Lord Shiva at this temple. This temple is estimated to be 50 to 70 years old. All Hindu festivals are celebrated here, because the temple houses both Shiva and Vishnu.

The Agasthiyar Temple faces east. It has a five-tiered Rajagopuram on the east and north sides. The sanctum sanctorum has statues of Shiva and Parvati in standing posture. The Moolavar is slightly below ground level. In front of the Ambal Sannadhi, you’ll find the Palipedam.

Visiting the Agasthiyar Temple provides a unique experience. It is a place where mythology, devotion and art come together. Take a moment to appreciate the detailed sculptures. Notice the unique arrangement of deities. Consider the history of this sacred place. The Agasthiyar Temple is open from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM and from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A visit here offers a peaceful escape. It provides a deeper connection to Chennai’s cultural heritage.
