Originally located on Wyandotte and Hewitt Streets, Hamtramck High School holds a special place in the community’s heart. Hamtramck High School is a public high school in Hamtramck. Back in 1925, Hamtramck High School had 655 students. That was significantly more than all of Detroit’s Polish Catholic high schools combined. Can you imagine that? Hamtramck High School was a hub of education for Catholic Immigrants in Detroit.
The school made a significant move in 1970. It relocated to the former Copernicus Junior Middle School building. This transition marked a new chapter for Hamtramck High School.
Hamtramck High School’s student body reflects the city’s diverse population. In 2016-17, the school enrolled 999 students. The student body included a majority of male students. There were also students of Asian, Black, Hispanic, White, and Multiracial backgrounds. A significant portion of the students identified as Arab. This diversity showcases Hamtramck’s evolution as a melting pot of cultures.
The school’s commitment to supporting its students is evident. A large percentage of students were eligible for free or reduced-cost lunch. Hamtramck High School was designated as a Title I school in 2016-17. This designation highlights the school’s dedication to providing resources for students from low-income families.

Mike Kostiuk and Art Macioszczyk were football players. Cass Michaels and Bill Nahorodny played in MLB. Rudy Tomjanovich was a player and coach for the Houston Rockets. These alumni have made significant contributions in various fields.
