Founded in 1832 by Ioannis Kapodistrias, the National Library of Greece began modestly. It started with just 1,018 volumes collected from Greeks and philhellenes. Imagine those early days. The library was housed in an orphanage on the island of Aegina.
Later in 1834, the \u039a\u03c4\u03af\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf \u0392\u03b9\u03b2\u03bb\u03b9\u03bf\u03b8\u03ae\u03ba\u03b7\u03c2 moved to Athens. It resided temporarily in a public bath in the Roman Agora. Then it found a spot in the Church of Panagia Gorgoepikoos. The collection grew quickly through purchases and donations.
In 1842, a significant event occurred. The Public Library merged with the Athens University’s library. This combined collection of books found a home in King Othon’s University building. By 1863, more donations and rare foreign books arrived. The royal charter of 1866 officially established the National Library of Greece.
A new chapter began in 1888. The foundation stone was laid for a neoclassical marble building. Financed by the Vallianos brothers, designed by Theophil von Hansen, and supervised by Ernst Ziller. That includes 300 million electronic resources and 15,000 newspaper and magazine titles. It boasts 5,500 Greek manuscripts. The \u039a\u03c4\u03af\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf \u0392\u03b9\u03b2\u03bb\u03b9\u03bf\u03b8\u03ae\u03ba\u03b7\u03c2 holds treasures like a codex of the four Gospels attributed to Matthew. Also the Flora Graeca Sibthorpiana and the Charta of Greece by Rigas Velestinlis.
To better serve its growing collection, the \u039a\u03c4\u03af\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf \u0392\u03b9\u03b2\u03bb\u03b9\u03bf\u03b8\u03ae\u03ba\u03b7\u03c2 expanded. In 2018, it moved to a new building at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center. This modern space was designed by Renzo Piano. It combines traditional elements with technological innovation. The new library aims to be a community hub for knowledge and innovation. It offers free reading rooms and workstations.
