Gazing upon Betzenhausen today, it’s hard to imagine it as a humble village. Betzenhausen’s story begins in 972. A certificate from Otto I mentions it in a grant to Einsiedeln Abbey. For over 400 years, from 1381, Betzenhausen belonged to Freiburg. Then in 1807, it declared independence, becoming a sovereign community. This newfound freedom, however, didn’t bring prosperity. By the late 19th century, Betzenhausen faced financial hardship. The community saw rejoining Freiburg as its best option. But they had conditions. They demanded a dedicated water pipe, a new school, improved roads, and street lighting. Negotiations stretched until 1907. Freiburg, recognizing the potential for westward expansion, agreed. Betzenhausen officially became part of Freiburg on January 1, 1908. The 20th century brought significant changes. The 1970s saw the development of Bischofslinde. This area became a new center with St. Albert’s Catholic Church and the Anne-Frank School. Student housing sprung up to the north. Then in 1986, Freiburg hosted the Landgartenschau Baden-Württemberg. This horticultural show centered around the Flückigersee. Its legacy is the Seepark, a sprawling recreational area enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. Today, Betzenhausen boasts a mix of old and new. The church of St. Thomas, built in 1767-68, stands as a testament to the district’s history. Modern amenities, like the Hallenbad West, Freiburg’s largest swimming pool, cater to contemporary needs. From a small village mentioned in a centuries-old certificate, Betzenhausen has evolved into a vibrant district of Freiburg. Its story is one of resilience, adaptation, and growth.
