Picture this a majestic concrete structure rising before you. This is the Kantgaragen a multi-storey car park in Berlin’s Charlottenburg district. Built in 1930 it was Berlin’s first multi-level parking garage.

The Kantgaragen is more than just a parking lot. It’s a testament to the Bauhaus architectural style. Its unique design features a curtain wall of glass. A double helix ramp system a marvel of engineering is also a highlight. This innovative ramp was the first of its kind in Germany. It remains unique as the oldest surviving garage with this type of ramp in Europe and one of the oldest worldwide.

Its history is rich and dramatic. Designed by architects Hermann Zweigenthal and Richard Paulick it was built for entrepreneur Louis Serlin. The engineering came from the firm Lohmüller Korschelt & Renker. Serlin originally intended the Kantgaragen to be a luxurious car park. He secured the German Automobile Club as a major tenant. The garage even boasted a gas station car repair shop wash stations and a hydraulic lift for lubrication services. It had central heating a luxury for that era.

Sadly this impressive building also bears scars from its past. The Nazis seized it from its Jewish owner Louis Serlin during World War II. Serlin was forced to flee Germany. He eventually settled in Los Angeles after the war. The garage survived the war with minimal damage. Though the original glass curtain wall was partly replaced after the war. The building’s future was uncertain for years threatened with demolition. But its historical significance ensured its protection.

Today the Kantgaragen has been transformed. It no longer serves as a car park. It has found new life. It houses a variety of businesses including a co-working space a gallery and event space. This remarkable structure has shown its strength and endurance over almost a century. It stands not only as a symbol of automotive history but also as a beacon of adaptability. The Kantgaragen stands as a vibrant testament to its past. A fascinating journey from the rise of automobiles to the reinvention of its space. The Kantgaragen continues to shape Berlin’s landscape. It has transitioned from a parking palace to a versatile hub for business. It is a landmark of architecture and resilience.
