Originally known as the History and Traditions Museum it opened in 1956. It was one of twelve satellite museums to the National Museum of the United States Air Force. In 2010 the museum received its current name.

Bill Manchester is the director of the Airman Heritage Training Complex. He notes that the museum covers the history of JBSA-Lackland. This includes its time as part of Kelly Field in 1942. It also covers its designation as “The Gateway to the Air Force” in 1947.

The museum boasts 35 exhibits. These include scale models of planes and a B-24 bomber simulator. There is even an original Curtiss JN-4 “Jenny” biplane. This aircraft was a primary training plane during World War I.

In 2019 the Airman Heritage Museum had 36000 visitors. It continues to educate and inspire. The Airman Heritage Foundation supports the museum. It raises funds to preserve the legacy of enlisted airmen.
