It’s easy to see why people might attribute a playful spirit to this bronze figure. Standing proudly in Largo de Alexandre Sá Pinto, O Operário, or “The Worker” in English, is a testament to the hard-working men and women who built modern Porto. Created in 1933 by sculptor Henrique Araújo Moreira, the statue doesn’t depict a mythical hero or a famous historical figure. It portrays an everyday laborer, his tools at his side, forever frozen in a moment of rest. He leans back slightly, a twinkle in his eye as if sharing a secret with the city he helped to build.
