“A deep and fulfilling personal relationship with Jesus Christ.” That’s the simple yet profound goal of Faith Baptist Church. Are you ready to delve into the story of a community that started with a prayer and grew into a vibrant testament of faith?

Faith Baptist Church stands as a beacon of hope. It is a testament to unwavering belief in the heart of Philadelphia. Its history is not just a timeline. It’s a narrative of perseverance, community, and divine guidance.

In April 1953, Rev. Richard J. Thomas heard about a need in Fairless Hills and Levittown. He volunteered to survey Baptist families. After three days, he recommended establishing a Baptist presence. Initial services faltered due to lack of leadership.

Undeterred, Rev. Thomas moved to Levittown in August 1953. He felt a growing conviction to start a ministry. In September 1954, he proposed a prayer service. Only three men attended the first meeting and none returned. The Thomases continued to pray. By November, God called them to start a work by faith.

Public buildings were scarce. The Thomas Jefferson School was chosen despite the high rent. On December 22nd, permission was granted to use it. Services would start on January 2nd, 1955. Rev. Thomas borrowed money to secure the school and create invitations. He walked miles distributing them. The new church was named Faith Baptist Church.

January 2nd, 1955, marked the first service. Only about fifteen people attended. Many soon left. For a year and a half, the church faced challenges. Over seventy-five professions of faith were made in homes. Yet, only a few families remained committed.

The high rent at the school prompted prayers for a cheaper place. Miraculously, $1,000 arrived in one week. This allowed a down payment on a home at 428 Holly Drive. From November 1st, 1955, to May 1st, 1956, services were held in this home. In May 1956, services moved to the Fairless Hills Community Center.

On January 1st, 1957, a spiritual nucleus of nineteen adults formally organized Faith Baptist Church. Rev. Richard J. Thomas was called as their first pastor. Douglas Scarbrough, Russell Cook, Charles Cuthertson, Wilfred Vogel, and Howard King became the first deacons. They worked alongside the pastor.

Faith Baptist Church is more than just a building. It’s a story of answered prayers. It embodies unwavering faith and community spirit. It started with a simple desire to connect with Jesus Christ. This desire transformed into a thriving church. It continues to serve the Philadelphia suburbs.
