Have you ever seen a lighthouse in the middle of a lake? That’s exactly what awaits you here at Woodlawn Lake. This charming little lighthouse stands proudly in the center of Woodlawn Lake a manmade lake in San Antonio Texas. It’s not just any lighthouse though. This is a miniature version a delightful beacon adding a unique nautical touch to the park.
The Woodlawn Lake Lighthouse is more than just a pretty face. Its history is as intriguing as its location. While the exact date of its construction is a mystery city officials believe it was likely built during the 1930s as part of the Works Progress Administration WPA projects. The WPA was President Franklin D Roosevelt’s New Deal program. It aimed to create jobs and improve infrastructure during the Great Depression. The WPA’s investment in Woodlawn Lake included dredging the lake improving tennis courts building bridges and even landscaping the area. Our little lighthouse was a part of this ambitious project adding a touch of whimsy to the improved park.
The lighthouse is a small replica. It’s not designed to guide ships. It’s designed to guide the eye. It stands about 20 feet tall. Its small lights automatically switch on at sunset. They cast a gentle glow across the water. The Woodlawn Sailing Club uses it as a landmark during their radio-controlled boat regattas. Photographers love it. They use it as a centerpiece in stunning shots of the regattas.
The lake itself has a rich history. Initially created in 1887 by damming Alazan Creek it was part of a failed attempt to build a luxury residential subdivision called West End Town. The lake’s size has fluctuated over the years. Today it’s about 30 acres. But records suggest it may have once been much larger up to 80 acres. The lighthouse’s origin might be tied to this early development project. It would certainly add to the charm of a resort.
The Woodlawn Lake Lighthouse is hollow. There’s a metal door near the base. If the water level is high enough you can even go inside. A ladder leads to the top. It’s a secret treasure. A hidden adventure waiting for those who dare to explore.
