Gazing upon Gyzi, did you know this Athenian neighborhood’s name has a quirky origin? It’s named after the renowned painter Nikolaos Gyzis, around 1925. Interestingly, he signed his artwork using the Latin alphabet, a remnant of his time in Germany. This led to the current spelling and pronunciation of “Gyzi,” slightly different from the original Greek. Gyzi experienced rapid growth in the 1960s and 70s. Today, it’s a bustling area known for its strong base of Panathinaikos fans. This loyalty likely stems from its proximity to the Leoforos Alexandras Stadium, the team’s traditional home. Gyzi boasts several local teams including Gyziakos, Panellinios, and Anagennisi Gyzi-Polygono. The area also houses two primary schools and four high schools, serving the community’s educational needs. A tragic event marked Gyzi’s history on May 15, 1985. A shootout occurred between far-left militant Christos Tsoutsouvis, an accomplice, and police. This resulted in four deaths, a somber chapter in the neighborhood’s story. For those visiting, the closest metro stations are Ampelokipi and Panormou on line 3 and Victoria on line 1. Gyzi offers a glimpse into modern Athens, blending residential life with a passionate sports culture.
