Did you know that Muhammad Ali once graced Dubai with his presence? This is the Muhammad Ali room in Dubai. It serves as a reminder of the champion’s visits to the United Arab Emirates. These visits highlight a unique chapter in his storied life.

Muhammad Ali’s connection to the UAE goes back further than you might expect. Although boxing wasn’t a mainstream sport here, Ali’s global appeal transcended sporting boundaries. He first visited the Trucial States in 1969. He returned at least three more times before 1986.

His initial visit coincided with a pilgrimage to Mecca. He stopped in Abu Dhabi. There, he witnessed his widespread popularity. Abdullah Kaddas Al Rumaithi hosted Ali. Al Rumaithi was an agricultural engineer. A photo shows Ali on Al Rumaithi’s Saadiyat Island vegetable farm surrounded by locals. Another photo captures Ali learning to write his name in Arabic.

In 1982, Ali returned to the UAE for a series of exhibition fights. The legendary boxer was nearing 41. He took to the ring against Jimmy Ellis and Reiner Hartmann. The purpose was to raise money to build mosques in the United States. He aimed to raise $2.5 million to help spread Islam in America.

Posters advertising the tour were plastered along Dubai Creek Road. Radio ads encouraged people to see “The Greatest” in person. The first event occurred at Sheikh Zayed Sports Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Tickets ranged from Dh30 to Dh200. Bollywood stars added glamour. Ali joked with the media. He quipped, “The other night I turned off the light… and was in bed before the room was dark.” Despite the fanfare, Ali admitted he was past his prime.

The second event was at Al Nasr’s Maktoum Stadium in Dubai. Ali fought both Hartmann and Ellis. He won both bouts. Yet the crowd turnout was less than anticipated. The final night was canceled.

Ian Fairservice interviewed Ali during his UAE stay. He noted Ali’s weary condition. Fairservice’s article described the tour as a “tragic vaudeville of lost direction.” He suggested Ali’s health was declining. Despite this assessment, Ali continued to engage with fans.

Four years later, Ali returned for a promotional appearance. He entertained the local media with magic tricks. He balanced a silver ball on a handkerchief. The handkerchief then disappeared.

The Muhammad Ali room in Dubai commemorates these visits. It immortalizes the moments when the world’s greatest boxer connected with the Emirates. It serves as a reminder of his enduring legacy that stretched far beyond the boxing ring. His spirit of greatness touched people from all walks of life.
