Once a wasteland, now a wonder. That’s the story of Wasit Nature Reserve. This incredible place shows how we can transform damage into beauty. Today, we explore this haven for birds and nature lovers.

Wasit Nature Reserve is located near Wasit suburb in Sharjah. It covers 0.86 square kilometers. This coastal strip is a major pathway for migratory birds. The reserve boasts gardens, green spaces, salt flats, plains, dunes, beaches and lakes. Wasit Nature Reserve is a green lung for the emirate. It is a unique destination for recreation.

In 2007, Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al-Qasimi declared this site a nature reserve. His Highness recognized the importance of this area. The Wasit Nature Reserve now hosts approximately 200 bird species. Around 60 species live inside the educational center. The reserve is also home to small mammals, reptiles and insects. Rare insect species were first discovered in the UAE here.

But how did this transformation happen? The area was once a rubbish and wastewater dump. Over 10 years, officials worked to reforest the region. They sought to bring migratory birds back. Over 35000 trees were replanted. Conservation efforts preserved the salt flats and coastal sand dunes.

Dubai-based X-Architects designed the Wasit Natural Reserve Visitor Centre. Farid Esmaeil, a founding partner, said they wanted to contribute to this national resource. They designed a space with “zero architecture” as its starting point. The building is partly submerged within the ground. This design minimizes disturbance to the birds.

The Wasit Natural Reserve Visitor Centre is 100 meters long. The interior covers roughly 3000 square meters. The galleries elevate nature with grass on both sides. The tilted glass reflects the ground. This prevents birds from smashing into it. Visitors can view birds up close. They frolic across the trees outside the glass walls.

The Wasit Natural Reserve is eco-friendly. Light posts are made from recycled wood. There is a water recycling zone. It serves as a breeding facility. Birds are cared for before release into nature. A research center tracks the birds’ migratory routes. Educational and veterinary facilities are also available.

Wasit Nature Reserve plays an important role in preserving the environment. The vegetation filters the air. It removes harmful gases and dust. Oxygen content in the atmosphere increases. Global warming reduces. Wasit Wetland Center received the 2019 Aga Khan Award for Architecture. This award recognizes its significance.

Farid Esmaeil says the Wasit Natural Reserve continues to increase in beauty. Over time, nature has flourished. Less architecture is visible. It’s becoming heaven. Wasit Nature Reserve stands as a testament. It shows what we can achieve with vision and dedication.

As you leave Wasit Nature Reserve remember its story. A story of transformation. A story of dedication to nature. A story that proves even a dump can become an Eden.
