Why does Uni Augsburg Gebäude R stand here today? The story of this university is one of ambition. It is a story of reform and adaptation. Let’s delve into the past.
The University of Augsburg was founded in 1970. It marked a new chapter for higher education in Bavarian Swabia. Before that, Augsburg lacked its own university. Dillingen an der Donau was the region’s intellectual center. Its university dated back to 1549.
The push for a university in Augsburg gained momentum after World War II. Initial hopes centered on a medical academy. However, political forces favored a second medical faculty in Munich. As a compromise, the Bavarian Parliament decided to establish a college for economics and social sciences in Augsburg.
In 1969, the idea of founding a full university in Augsburg emerged. This proposal was surprising. Several factors supported this step. There was a need to integrate teacher training colleges into state universities. A new university offered a chance for innovative legal education. Plus, it could relieve the overcrowded humanities departments at the University of Munich.
The University of Augsburg’s founding law was passed in December 1969. It became effective on January 1, 1970. Initially, it comprised only the economics and social sciences department. The official opening took place in October 1970.
Those early years were challenging. The university was meant to be a reform university. New approaches were planned for law and teacher training. Small group teaching was to be emphasized. Louis Perridon served as the University of Augsburg’s founding president.
Accommodating the new departments posed a challenge. Catholic theology, law and philosophy were added quickly. The dissolved teacher training college in Augsburg was integrated. A structure advisory board developed a concept for the young university.
Conflicts arose. These conflicts concerned the composition of the university’s governing bodies. A dispute emerged between the university and the Bavarian Ministry of Culture. The ministry wanted a majority of professors in these bodies. Perridon advocated for equal representation of professors, assistants and students.
Franz Knöpfle succeeded Perridon as president in 1973. Knöpfle worked to consolidate the university. Construction began on the campus in 1974. The first building was completed in 1977. The philosophy and Catholic theology departments moved in.
In 1978, the University of Augsburg outlined its future plans. It aimed to include natural sciences and medicine. Karl M. Meessen became president in 1979. The state of Bavaria presented the university library with valuable manuscripts and prints. The university also received its coat of arms.
Meessen pushed for a medical academy. However, he faced resistance. Central reform elements were gradually abandoned due to limited resources. In 1981, the student population exceeded 5,000.
Josef Becker became president in 1983. The faculty of natural sciences was established. It focused on mathematics, computer science and physics. By 1988, the university had over 10,000 students. Space was limited. Staff numbers did not keep pace with student growth.
Reinhard Blum became rector in 1991. Disparities persisted between staffing levels and student numbers. The economics faculty faced space issues. The university sought to maintain its strengths and explore new areas. Environmental sciences were one such area.
Wilfried Bottke became rector in 1999. The University of Augsburg defined its profile. It emphasized the social sciences, teacher training and innovative technologies. The university expanded its focus on natural sciences and technology. The Leopold Mozart Center for Music and Music Pedagogy was integrated in 2008.
In 2011, Sabine Doering-Manteuffel became president. She was the first woman to lead a state university in Bavaria. The development of Augsburg University Hospital became a key goal. In 2016, the faculty of medicine was established.
The University of Augsburg strives to expand its range of subjects in technology and engineering. The campus has grown over the years. Its buildings reflect various architectural styles. Artworks are located throughout the campus. From humble beginnings, Uni Augsburg Gebäude R stands as a testament to progress.
