“Remember when St Gabriel’s Church stood tall” This wasn’t just any church. It was a beacon in Manhattan a vibrant heart of faith and community. Located at 310 East 37th Street in Murray Hill it stood from 1865 to 1939. Imagine the Gothic Revival architecture a stunning brick structure with brownstone accents. The brownstone came from Belleville New Jersey a detail few remember.

St Gabriel’s wasn’t just bricks and mortar. It was a story of faith perseverance and ultimately sacrifice. Born from the Church of St John the Evangelist its parish formed in 1859. Early services took place in a humble two-story brick building. Rev William H Clowry the first rector laid the foundation for what would become a bustling parish.

Henry James Anderson a professor at Columbia College generously donated land for the church. The cornerstone was laid in 1864 construction delayed by the Civil War. The completed church boasted a groined ceiling supported by eighteen columns. Giuseppe Mazzolini’s impressive Annunciation painting graced the chancel.

The church wasn’t just a place of worship it was a community hub. A parochial school opened in 1860 educating hundreds of children. The first floor even served as a chapel for the growing congregation of 1500. Two future Cardinal Archbishops of New York John Murphy Farley and Patrick Joseph Hayes served at St Gabriel’s. Farley is noted for introducing electric lighting.

The church witnessed significant events. The funeral of Fenian Thomas Francis Bourke took place here a testament to the church’s importance within the Irish community. Sadly St Gabriel’s wasn’t immune to the march of progress. The construction of the Queens Midtown Tunnel led to its demolition in May 1939. It’s heartbreaking to think of the church’s fate.

The altar pews and statues found a new home in Riverdale Bronx at a newly constructed St Gabriel’s Church. The memories however remained. The site’s legacy lives on. The area was renamed St Vartan Park in 1978. But the spirit of St Gabriel’s and its remarkable story endures in the hearts of those who remember it. A church that once stood proudly now stands in memory.
