Can you imagine a Jewish community thriving in the heart of Beijing? Kehilat Beijing stands as a testament to this vibrant reality. Kehilat Beijing isn’t a historical relic, but a living, breathing community. It traces its modern roots back to 1979, when China’s “Open Door” policy breathed new life into the nation. Kehilat Beijing began modestly. North American businesspeople, journalists, and diplomats sought to connect with their Jewish heritage. Early gatherings focused on Passover and the High Holy Days, celebrated in the homes of community members. The first Seder took place in 1980, a milestone for the burgeoning community. By the early 1990s, Kehilat Beijing expanded. Jews from around the world, including Australia, England, France, and Israel, joined the community. In 1995, regular Friday night services commenced at the Capital Club of Beijing. A generous donation of a Sefer Torah marked a significant step. The community embraced all major holidays. They also established a children’s class and an adult discussion group. Kehilat Beijing celebrated its first Bar Mitzvah in 1996 and its first Brit Milah in 1997. Remarkably, these milestones were achieved without a rabbi or a mohel. Today, Kehilat Beijing continues to flourish. They hold weekly lay-led Shabbat services and dinners. They also host holiday celebrations, educational opportunities, community retreats, and excursions. Kehilat Beijing embodies the enduring spirit of Jewish life in the heart of China. It is a place where tradition meets modernity. It also embraces Jews from around the globe.
