Marvelous aren’t they? Those stones in the Sanbo-in garden. Each one a whispered story of the past.

Welcome to Sanbo-in a sub-temple of Daigo-ji in Kyoto. It’s not in Osaka. This exquisite temple boasts a history stretching back centuries. Originally founded in 1115 it underwent a magnificent transformation in 1598. The famed warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi oversaw the extensive renovations. He envisioned Sanbo-in as a place for lavish tea ceremonies and cherry blossom viewings.

The garden isn’t just any garden. It’s a masterpiece. Over 700 carefully placed stones form a breathtaking landscape. One particular stone the Fujito-no-Ishi is legendary. It’s said to have cost Hideyoshi an incredible 5000 bushels of rice. A Noh play was even written about it. That’s dedication to a rock. The garden wasn’t just a whim. It was designed for viewing from within the temple. The temple buildings themselves are remarkable. The Karamon gate a National Treasure is simply stunning. It’s black lacquer and gold detailing perfectly reflect the Azuchi-Momoyama period’s opulence.

Inside you’ll find exquisite sliding door paintings fusuma-e. These masterpieces were created by artists of the Kano school a prestigious lineage of Japanese painters. These paintings are incredibly detailed and add a layer of elegance to Sanbo-in. But you can’t photograph them. You’ll have to rely on memory. Hideyoshi sadly never saw the completed garden. He died in 1598. Yoshiro his chief gardener continued the work. In 1618 the garden was declared a masterpiece. Yoshiro received the honorary title Kentei Excellent Gardener. A fitting tribute to his artistry and skill.

So take a moment. Breathe in the beauty of Sanbo-in. Imagine the lavish parties that once graced this place. Appreciate the skill of those who created such a magnificent haven. It’s a journey through time. It’s a feast for the senses. It’s Sanbo-in.
