The church moved several times. It started in rented space. Then it found a home donated by Judge George J Penfield. The original wooden structure was later moved piece by piece. It was renovated to fit the architectural style of the time. The church was renamed Washingtonville Methodist Episcopal Church in 1888. It later became Grace Methodist Episcopal Church of Mount Vernon.
Throughout its history Wakefield Grace faced challenges. A lightning strike in 1927 damaged a tower. The church took on a mortgage to repair it. The congregation celebrated paying off the debt with a memorable ceremony. A fire in 1989 caused further damage. The stained glass windows needed replacing. The organ was refurbished.
