Here stands Martin Street Church of God. It is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a testament to faith and community.
Martin Street Church of God is one of the oldest churches in Atlanta’s Summerhill neighborhood. Its story began in 1888. Sisters Mary Fambro and Lena Cooper started a holiness band. They held meetings in houses, on streets and in tents.
Around 1890, the group received a generous gift. A house at 452 Martin Street was donated to them. The building was remodeled. It became a worship facility seating 163 people. The church remained at this location for over 100 years.
Sister Lizzie Watts was one of the first pastors. Ministers George Clemmons and Joseph Brookins also served. D.S. Brooks, W.W. Taylor and George S. Wilson followed. George S. Wilson served as pastor for 33 years.
In August 1984, Manuel Holston became the pastor. He had been involved in many church ministries. He was an usher and Sunday School teacher. He also served as Sunday School Superintendent and Trustee Board Member. Holston ministered at nursing homes too. He was officially installed as pastor on October 27, 1985.
Pastor Holston had a great vision for Martin Street Church of God. He looked past the difficult circumstances. He recognized the great potential.
In January 1994, construction began on a new sanctuary. After more than a century at 452 Martin Street, it was time to move. On February 5, 1995, the congregation moved to 148 Glenwood Avenue. This location was just one block from the old building. The new building could seat over 1000 people. The old pews fit neatly in the new building’s balcony.
Pastor Arthur Grier joined Martin Street Church of God in October 1979. He was called to ministry in October 1981. He was licensed as a minister in 1984. In December 2009, he was named Pastor-Elect. He was ordained in January 2010. On June 6, 2010, he was installed as the new pastor.
Pastor Grier served in many ministries. These included teaching new converts and coordinating Financial Peace University. He also directed the Teachers’ Ministry and served on the Finance Committee. He was Assistant Sunday School Superintendent and a Sunday School Teacher. Grier ministered to youth and served as Athletic Director and coach. He also tutored math at Martin Street Christian Academy.
Pastor Grier is married to Grace Dennis Grier. They have three adult sons, Nicholas, Gabriel and Stephen. They also have a teenage daughter, Dawn and one granddaughter, Kayla.
Pastor Grier’s vision is to be transformed by the love of Jesus Christ. He wants to live to transform others through the Word of God. He is known for his commitment to God, family and his love for people.
