What secrets does Blochairn hold? Blochairn isn’t just a name on a map. It’s a place woven into the fabric of Glasgow, a district north of the River Clyde with a history as vibrant as the city itself. Blochairn whispers tales of industry, of iron and steel, and the tireless hands that shaped them. Long before the fruit market, Blochairn housed the Blochairn Iron Works, established in the 1850s on the grounds of the former Blochairn House. This industrial giant aimed to capture the booming malleable iron market demanded by Clyde shipyards. The works changed hands, facing financial struggles, until 1880 when the Steel Company of Scotland took over. The Blochairn works were transformed, embracing cutting-edge steel production techniques thanks to James Riley. The Universal Mill was installed in 1885, a pioneering feat of engineering, maybe the first of its kind in Britain, specifically designed for rolling slabs. Blochairn wasn’t content with resting on its laurels. A Universal plate mill arrived in 1885, followed by a Lauth plate mill in 1888. However, the Lauth mill, despite its potential, proved less reliable. E.J. Duff, Riley’s assistant, lamented in the Journal of the Iron and Steel Institute, that the mill could roll massive plates but suffered from design flaws. The Blochairn works learned, adapted and continued to evolve. By 1895, the focus shifted to two reversing plate mills. The company secured its future in 1909 by acquiring mineral fields and developing collieries at Garthamlock and Queenslie, ensuring a steady supply of fuel via the Monklands Canal. Blochairn’s story is one of resilience. It faced closure in 1947 following a postwar industry review. Yet, it persevered, its plate mill humming back to life with a new electric motor drive in 1954. Finally, around 1962, Blochairn’s industrial chapter closed as the Clydebridge plate mill took over production. But Blochairn wasn’t finished. From the ashes of industry rose the Blochairn Fruit Market in 1969. Blochairn, once the heart of Glasgow’s steel industry, now feeds the city and beyond, a testament to its enduring spirit.
