Ever wonder about a place named for good fortune? That is Singil-dong. I will tell you about this neighborhood of Seoul.

Singil-dong sits in Yeongdeungpo District. It is near Yeouido and Saetgang. Long ago, it was a key transportation spot. The Banghakhojin ferry terminal was here. It helped people get to Seoul back in the Joseon period.

Most of Singil-dong was farmland. It had many flat fields. The name “Singil-dong” is interesting. No one knows for sure where it came from. But people think it means “new luck”. “Singil” means just that. It likely refers to the area’s past as a port. People hoped for good things in this community.

In 2001, Singil-dong had a large population. About 146,519 people lived here. That is about 41,000 people per square kilometer. The total area of Singil-dong is 3.58 square kilometers.

Singil Station is also located here. It is on Seoul Subway Lines 1 and 5. The walk between the two lines is quite long. It is about 260 meters. Line 1 station was the first aboveground station in South Korea. It had platform screen doors.

In 2020, an accident happened near Singil Station. An express train derailed. It was caused by a broken axle. Luckily, no one was hurt. However, it did affect train lines.

Singil-dong is more than just a neighborhood. It is a place with a history. From its ferry past to its modern subway, Singil-dong connects people. Its name reminds us that new luck is always possible. Take a moment to appreciate the blend of history and hope here in Singil-dong. It is a unique part of Seoul’s story.
