In 2006, Besate indeed held the top spot for average income per capita in Italy. It was the wealth generated by the flourishing cheese industry that put this small town on the map. The Gelmini Cheese Factory, established generations ago, has been producing Gorgonzola DOP, a protected designation of origin cheese. Its renown and export success have made Besate a name synonymous with the world’s most flavorful cheese. “So it’s not just about the cheese?” my companion asked, puzzled. “It’s also about the hard work and dedication of the local people,” I explained. “This town has a proud tradition of family-run businesses that have kept the cheese industry alive and thriving.” We walked further through Besate, past charming houses with well-tended gardens bursting with vibrant blooms.
