The salty air whispers secrets. Secrets of Playa del Rey a seaside haven nestled on the westside of Los Angeles.

Playa del Rey meaning Beach of the King in Spanish holds a captivating history. It was once a vibrant wetland teeming with life. The Tongva people thrived here for millennia. They fished and harvested shellfish using te’aats wooden plank boats. Their main village Guashna was a bustling regional trade center.

In the 1870s a bold attempt to create Port Ballona Harbor failed. Moye Wicks’ syndicate invested heavily in dredging. Winter storms quickly overwhelmed the project. What remained became the Del Rey Lagoon a beloved public park today.

The early 1900s saw the arrival of a streetcar. It connected Playa del Rey to Alla Station. A tally-ho awaited eager land buyers. The Playa del Rey Motordome a pioneering board track was built in 1910. It hosted exciting bike and auto races.

Palisades del Rey the original name for the 1921 land development is a reminder of its past. Hollywood stars like Cecil B DeMille and Charles Bickford built custom beach homes here. The area was advertised as the last undeveloped coastal land in Los Angeles.

Construction boomed in 1928. The Del Rey Hills neighborhood expanded. Loyola University now Loyola Marymount University moved to nearby Westchester.

Sadly the southern portion known as Surfridge is now vacant. Between 1966 and 1975 homes were demolished. The expansion of LAX and the noise from flights forced residents to move. The City of Los Angeles used eminent domain. Today barbed-wire fences guard empty streets. This area is now a protected habitat for the endangered El Segundo blue butterfly.

Playa del Rey was a famous surf spot in the 1950s and 60s. Jetties built to prevent erosion changed the waves. The northernmost part still known as Toes Beach remains a popular surfing spot.

Today Playa del Rey is a unique blend of history and modernity. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of a community that has navigated change while preserving its charm. The Pacific Avenue Bridge offers a stunning view. It is a pedestrian and bicycle crossing connecting Playa del Rey to the north and south. The area’s affluent residents enjoy a high quality of life. Many work in the tech industry or related fields. Playa del Rey a beach of kings indeed a place where history and luxury intertwine.
