Was it fate that brought you here to Shazikou Mosque? This mosque stands as a testament to Beijing’s rich Islamic heritage. Shazikou Mosque is located in the Yongdingmenwai area of Beijing’s Dongcheng District. This area has been a bustling hub of commerce for centuries.

The Hui people have lived here for generations. They are known for their skills in trade. Their Islamic faith is central to their community. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 more Muslims moved to this area.

In 1953 the local Muslim community gathered donations. They built the Shazikou Mosque. Ma Binru became the imam. He was a renowned religious leader from Damingfu in Hebei province. He brought his knowledge and guidance to this new mosque.

The Shazikou Mosque quickly became a vital part of the community. It offered a place for prayer and gathering. Over time the mosque needed repairs and expansions.

In June 1990 the local authorities stepped in. The Department of Public Affairs and the Islamic Association of Chongwen District sought government funding. They also collected donations from the Muslim community. This support allowed them to renovate Shazikou Mosque significantly. The new prayer hall expanded to over 158 square meters. The ablution room also grew to 61 square meters.

The local government consistently provides funds. This helps to maintain the mosque’s infrastructure. Heating and electricity are essential for worshippers. These improvements ensure comfort during prayers. Shazikou Mosque stands as a symbol of Islamic faith. It also shows the cultural diversity within Beijing. It is one of over 70 mosques in Beijing. The oldest mosque in Beijing is Niujie Mosque. It was built in 996.

Islam has a long history in Beijing. It arrived around the 10th century. The Yuan Dynasty saw a rise in Islam. Many Muslims came to China at that time. The Ming and Qing dynasties added to this growth. Over 30 mosques were built in Beijing during that period.
