Have you heard the story of the pig farmer who found three jars full of gold? No? Well, it’s true that Wat Prasoet Sutthawat in Bangkok bears a somewhat unusual history. Wat Prasoet Sutthawat, also known as Wat Klang or “Central Temple”, is a Buddhist temple dedicated to King Nangklao, the third monarch of the Rattanakosin period. It was originally built in 1838 by a Chinese man named Seng, who made his living raising pigs. Legend has it that Seng stumbled upon three large jars filled with gold. Instead of keeping this treasure for himself, he donated it to build Wat Prasoet Sutthawat. Wat Prasoet Sutthawat is an ancient temple. This temple, which is named after King Nangklao, stands on the banks of the canal Khlong Rat Burana. While the temple itself is intriguing, the most unique feature of Wat Prasoet Sutthawat is the beautiful, Chinese-style ordination hall, also called ubosot. What makes this hall so special? Well, inside Wat Prasoet Sutthawat, you will find murals depicting scenes from the famous Chinese novel “Romance of the Three Kingdoms”. These murals, painted in Chinese ink by Chinese artists, are the only ones of their kind in all of Thailand. The unique fusion of Thai and Chinese art makes Wat Prasoet Sutthawat a truly special place. Stepping inside, you can almost feel the past coming alive, the story of a generous pig farmer and the lasting legacy he created in this beautiful temple.
