Chinese Baptist Church

What building could possibly stand on a plot of land with such a rich and moving history? Right here, in the heart of San Antonio, stands the Chinese Baptist Church. The story of this church, however, begins long before its construction in 1994. It actually starts way back in 1919 with a chance encounter on the streets of downtown San Antonio. A kind Christian woman came across a Chinese man, lost and down on his luck. He expressed his deep desire for a place where he and his fellow Chinese could learn English. That’s when the seeds of the Chinese Baptist Church were sown. This simple encounter ignited a mission. Christian folks from different denominations: Baptists, Presbyterians, and Methodists, all united by compassion, answered the call. They began holding English classes using the Bible as their textbook. At first, they gathered at the historic Spanish Governor’s Palace. Later, to escape the hustle and bustle of the streets, they moved to a space on West Commerce Street, lovingly dubbed “The Upper Room.” As they delved into the scriptures and shared their faith, many embraced Christianity. In 1923, this small but devoted group formally established themselves as The First Chinese Baptist Church. Their journey led them to Avenue B in 1940, where they made do with a small chapel. Imagine: Bible classes were held outdoors in the summer and even in cars during the chilly winter months! But their faith only grew stronger amidst these challenges. Through the years, the Chinese Baptist Church continued to expand, eventually finding its current home on Prue Road in 1994.
