Marvelous isn’t it? This is the Fontana dei due Draghi. Two magnificent marble dragons guard this historic fountain. Created in 1630 by the talented artist Mariano Smiriglio it’s a true Palermo treasure.

The fountain sits in a charming circular basin. The dragons face each other their marble mouths pouring water into the pool. A lovely wrought iron fence from the same era protects it. This spot was once part of the road between Palermo and Monreale. It was called Mezzomonreale then. Now it is Corso Calatafimi.

But here’s a secret. A fascinating acoustic phenomenon occurs here. Stand at one end of the semicircular wall that borders the fountain. Listen closely. You can clearly hear someone speaking even whispering at the opposite end. This is amazing. People in between cannot hear the conversation. Local kids use this for fun. They play tricks on unsuspecting people.

The Fontana dei due Draghi isn’t just a pretty face. It’s a piece of Palermo’s past. Its elegant design is a testament to the city’s artistic heritage. The dragons symbolize power and strength. Their constant flow of water represents the lifeblood of Palermo itself. The fountain stands as a quiet yet powerful symbol of Palermo’s enduring spirit.

So take a moment. Appreciate the beauty. Listen closely. Maybe you’ll hear a secret whisper from the past. Remember this unique acoustic wonder. The Fontana dei due Draghi a blend of artistry and mystery. A true testament to Palermo’s rich history and captivating charm.
