Can you imagine a mighty stronghold standing guard over the peninsula for centuries? Well, here it is – Lanestown Castle, a medieval tower house that whispers tales of bygone eras. Standing before you, Lanestown Castle is a testament to the turbulent history of the Donabate Portrane peninsula. Lanestown Castle, also known as Lanistown or Laudestown, is one of the largest surviving Tower houses on the peninsula. It’s been witness to countless changes, from its role as a defensive structure to its use as a cattle shelter in the 1970s. It dates back to the early 15th century, a time when Tower houses were built to protect landowners from raiders. The tower house was likely a part of King Henry VI’s 1429 scheme to protect the Pale, a region primarily inhabited by English settlers. This grand castle has an original entrance on its north side, protected by a “murder hole” above, a clever design that allowed defenders to rain down projectiles on unsuspecting attackers. Lanestown Castle’s ground floor is covered by a barrel vault, still fully intact, offering a glimpse into the castle’s original construction. Look closely and you might notice an unusual feature: a second ground level doorway on the western side. This door leads to a stairway to the first floor, adding intrigue to the castle’s layout. The first floor was where the castle’s inhabitants dined and lived. The fireplace, with its flue still intact, is a reminder of the warmth and comfort that once filled this room. The windows you see today were added much later, in the post-medieval period, as the castle adapted to changing times.
