“1897. Construction begins.” Now, imagine being present at the inception of Douglas Town Hall. This grand building officially opened on May 10th 1900. Alderman Samuel Webb, the mayor at that time, presided over the ceremony.
Douglas Town Hall emerged as a symbol of the Municipal Borough of Douglas. The borough came into being in 1896.
At the heart of the City Hall lies the council chamber. It measures 47ft long and 33ft wide. Warings of London crafted its arched and panelled ceiling. The Council gathers here monthly, excluding September, in public meetings.
These public council meetings occur on the second Wednesday of each month. They commence at 14:30, excluding September. You can find the chamber on the first floor. A lift provides easy access.
Douglas Town Hall encompasses several essential spaces. These include the Mayor’s parlour. There is also a committee room. Interview rooms also exist within. You will also find the City Hall reception counter. The Housing counter has its entrance on John Street. Moreover, the Environment & Regeneration department is housed here. The Finance department also operates from within these walls.
The City Hall welcomes visitors from Monday to Friday. Its doors are open from 08:45 to 17:15. Note the Finance Counter’s specific hours. It operates Monday to Thursday from 09:30 to 13:00. On Fridays, it extends its hours until 14:30.
