Overlooking the shimmering waters of Lake Constance, the Haltnau whispers tales of bygone eras. This historic vineyard estate, nestled between Meersburg and Hagnau, has witnessed centuries of history unfold. The Haltnau is more than just a picturesque spot. It’s a place where history, legend, and the art of winemaking intertwine. Owned by the Spitalkellerei Konstanz, Germany’s oldest charitable foundation winery, the Haltnau’s story is steeped in local lore. The legend of Wendelgard von Halten, a wealthy but lonely noblewoman, adds a touch of mystique to the Haltnau. Wendelgard, burdened by a physical anomaly, offered her estate to Meersburg in exchange for companionship. The town’s officials, hesitant about her unusual request, refused. Wendelgard then turned to Konstanz, where her offer was accepted. This act of kindness, or perhaps shrewd negotiation, led to the Haltnau becoming part of Konstanz’s heritage in 1272. The vineyard’s southwest-facing slopes and unique soil, a blend of molasse and moraine gravel, produce exceptional wines. These wines, bearing the “Meersburger Haltnau” label, represent a legacy dating back to 1272. Varieties like Müller-Thurgau, Weissburgunder, Traminer, Pinot, and Spätburgunder flourish here. Visitors to the Haltnau can savor these wines in the estate’s restaurant, alongside regional cuisine like Bodenseefelchen (Lake Constance whitefish). The restaurant, housed in a historic building dating back to the 15th-18th centuries, also features a “Wendelgarten am See,” a lakeside beer garden. A small pier, owned by the Stadtwerke Konstanz, provides access for boaters. Even the small watchtower perched above the vineyard has a story to tell. Dating back to 1600, this tiny structure served as a vantage point for overseeing the precious vines. The Haltnau has inspired artists and writers, too. Annette von Droste-Hülshoff sought refuge within its vineyards, recounting her experience in a letter. Martin Walser’s narrative “Brief an Lord Liszt” features the Haltnau’s inn as a key setting. Peter Lenk’s “Magische Säule” sculpture in Meersburg includes a depiction of Wendelgard. The Haltnau’s story continues to unfold. After extensive renovations, the estate has been revitalized, offering a modern yet historic setting for visitors. The Haltnau isn’t just a place to enjoy a glass of wine. It’s a place to experience the living legacy of Wendelgard, the vineyard’s unique terroir, and the enduring spirit of Lake Constance.
