October in Savannah. A crisp autumn air filled the streets in 1989. Inside a modest home on this very day, New Salem Community Fellowship Church held its first service. Bishop Nathaniel Small Sr. and his wife, Lady Jacqueline B. Small, opened their doors to a community seeking spiritual connection. New Salem Community Fellowship Church wasn’t just a church. It was a vision. A beacon of hope ignited in the hearts of Bishop and Lady Small. New Salem Community Fellowship Church quickly outgrew the Small’s home. They found a temporary location at the Frank Callen Boys and Girls Club on Charlton Street. The church continued to blossom, touching countless lives with its message of faith and community. Years turned into decades. New Salem Community Fellowship Church celebrated its 29th anniversary in 2018. Former Savannah Mayor Dr. Otis Johnson, a Scholar in Residence at Savannah State University, delivered a powerful sermon. He drew parallels between Bishop Small and the biblical figure Nehemiah. Both men left respected positions to rebuild and strengthen their communities. New Salem Community Fellowship Church found its permanent home at 115 West 40th Street in the heart of the Starland District. In 2023, the church welcomed new leadership. Dr. Raymond and Evangelist Clara Rouse were installed as senior pastors. The installation service was a grand affair, filled with music, prayer, and well wishes. The spirit of New Salem Community Fellowship Church, however, remained unchanged. It was still a place where people could come together, worship freely, and experience the beauty of holiness.
