“When did it all begin?” someone asks eyes wide with curiosity. The story of 가락동 성당 starts long before its physical establishment. It reflects Seoul’s rapid growth. This Catholic church in Songpa-dong tells a tale of community expansion and faith.

In the 1960s Seoul experienced an industrial boom. Urbanization led to a population surge. The areas of Jamsil Songpa and Garak saw quick development. Large-scale residential complexes emerged. This rapid growth led to a rise in the number of Catholics in the Garak-dong area.

Originally the faithful gathered at the ‘Garak-dong Gongso’. It was a small chapel. Recognizing the growing community the church planned an upgrade. In 1982 Jamsil Main Church took over Garak-dong Gongso from Macheon-dong Main Church. They moved it to Seokchon-dong. It was in the Yunsuk Building.

The church renamed the chapel. It became ‘Jamsil Main Church Garak Gongso’. The number of believers grew. Soon there were over 1600. The need for a dedicated church became clear.
