Malew Parish Church

Envision yourself transported back eight centuries. You’re standing on the grounds of Malew Parish Church. The air is thick with the scent of woodsmoke and the sound of chanting. Malew Parish Church, a place of worship, stands before you, not in its present form, but as a simple keeill, a small chapel built of sod and timber. Can you hear the whispers of ancient prayers? Malew Parish Church has borne witness to centuries of history. The church we see today is a blend of different eras, reflecting the island’s rich past. The nave, the oldest part of Malew Parish Church, possibly dates back to the 12th century. Imagine the changes it has seen. The chancel, however, tells a different story, built in 1781. The north transept, known as the “Wing,” followed shortly after in 1783. A significant restoration project breathed new life into the exterior of Malew Parish Church in 2014. This was thanks to the Friends of Malew, dedicated to preserving this historical gem. The name “Malew” itself is a bit of a puzzle. It’s believed to be derived from St. Lua or Molua, a Celtic saint. However, there seems to have been some disagreement. The Roman church, it’s said, wasn’t too keen on Irish saints. So, from the 15th century onwards, the church was dedicated to St. Lupus, a 5th-century Bishop of Troyes in France. Malew Parish Church held a position of great importance. Until 1921, it served as the parish church for Castletown. This town was the island’s capital from the 13th century until 1874. Many of Castletown’s residents found their final resting place in Malew’s churchyard. This historical significance continues to be recognized today. It is customary for the Bishop of the Diocese to deliver his first and last sermons on the island within these very walls.
