Could you imagine being transported back to 1964? That was when Đại đức Thích Pháp Siêu founded the serene Chùa Nguyên Hương. This temple is located at 361/27 Nguyễn Đình Chiểu street. It is in ward 5 of district 3 in Ho Chi Minh City.

Chùa Nguyên Hương belongs to the Bắc tông sect. Over the years several prominent figures have served as abbots. These include Hòa thượng Thích Minh Hạnh and Thượng tọa Thích Giác Tân. Today Thượng tọa Thích Thiện Bảo leads the temple. He also holds important positions in Vietnamese Buddhist organizations.

Step inside Chùa Nguyên Hương. Notice the solemn arrangement of the điện Phật. At the center the statue of Đức Bổn sư Thích Ca sits in meditation upon a lotus throne.

Chùa Nguyên Hương has undergone significant renovations since 2009. These renovations cost over 4 billion đồng. Thanks to Thượng tọa Thích Thiện Bảo’s leadership the temple has expanded. It now includes many additional structures. This provides more space for the community.

Every year Chùa Nguyên Hương observes the Thánh tử đạo Nguyên Hương anniversary. This ceremony takes place on the 15th day of the sixth lunar month.

Before 1963 this site was a niệm Phật đường. A group of Buddhists from the Phan Đình Phùng area established it. Over time it evolved into the Chùa Nguyên Hương we see today. The temple now covers 200 square meters with a tiered structure. It has one ground floor and three upper levels.

In recent times Chùa Nguyên Hương celebrated a special event. Dignitaries and devoted followers gathered to commemorate the temple. They acknowledged Thượng tọa Thích Thiện Bảo’s efforts. They also recognized contributions from the monks and the Buddhist community. Their collective efforts transformed the temple into a magnificent space.

As you leave Chùa Nguyên Hương consider its journey. From a small niệm Phật đường to a significant temple it reflects the enduring spirit of Buddhism. It showcases community dedication in Ho Chi Minh City.
