Beneath the ancient stones of Ye Olde Burying Ground whispers of history linger. This isn’t just a cemetery. It’s a living testament to Boston’s past. Founded in 1660 Ye Olde Burying Ground became Boston’s third cemetery. The city’s rapid growth demanded more burial space. The original King’s Chapel Burying Ground was overflowing.

Imagine the lives lived and lost within these hallowed grounds. Here rest Paul Revere a hero of the American Revolution. Three signers of the Declaration of Independence Samuel Adams John Hancock and Robert Treat Paine are buried here. Their legacy etched in stone. The five victims of the Boston Massacre also lie here. Their unmarked common grave a poignant reminder of a pivotal moment in history.

Ye Olde Burying Ground is more than just famous names. It’s a reflection of Puritan beliefs. Religious icons and imagery were shunned. Instead tombstones became canvases for artistic expression. Skulls wings and death’s heads symbolize the soul’s journey to heaven. These artistic motifs are poignant.

Over 2300 gravestones mark this land. But estimates suggest as many as 5000 people are buried here. Many graves remain unmarked lost to time. The ground itself holds untold stories. In January 2009 a previously unknown crypt was discovered when a tourist fell through the ground. The stairway to the crypt had been hidden. It was a startling discovery.

The ground has been altered and improved over time. Eleven large elm trees once shaded Tremont Street. A beautiful pathway known as Paddock’s Mall was created. In 1830 trees were planted. An iron fence designed by Isaiah Rogers was added in 1840. The fence was an expensive project. The elegant Egyptian revival gate is identical to one he designed for Newport’s Touro Cemetery.

Even Benjamin Franklin’s parents Josiah and Abiah are buried here. Their obelisk a testament to their son’s fame. The obelisk was dedicated in 1827. A granite monument replaced their deteriorated headstones. The oldest stone is from 1666. It belongs to the Neal children.

The Granary Burying Ground continues to evolve. It is a place of reflection. A living museum of Boston’s past. As you walk among these stones feel the weight of history. Let the whispers of the past speak to you. This is Ye Olde Burying Ground a place where the past comes alive.
