But now, we remember Maria Gräfin von Maltzan. She was a biologist, veterinarian, and a true hero. Maria fought against the Nazis. The Maria-von-Maltzan-Platz was named after her in 2021. The dedication took place on April 6, 2022.
Born in Silesia in 1909, Maria showed a deep love for animals early on. She also had a strong sense of justice. She attended the Elisabeth-Oberschule in Kochstraße. Maria graduated in 1927. Later, she studied zoology, botany, and anthropology in Breslau and Munich. She earned her doctorate in 1933.
When the Nazi regime rose, Maria joined the resistance. She helped many persecuted people escape. She even hid Jews in her own home. Her courage saved about 60 lives. In 1987, she received the title “Righteous Among the Nations.” It was a well-deserved honor.
After the war, Maria faced personal struggles. But her commitment to helping others never wavered. In 1981, she opened a veterinary practice. It was located on Oranienstraße. Her clinic became a haven for punks and their pets. Maria understood those who were marginalized.
Maria’s practice became a Kreuzberg institution. She wrote an autobiography in 1986. It was titled “Schlage die Trommel und fürchte dich nicht”. This translates to “Beat the Drums and Be Without Fright”.
The Bezirksverordnetenversammlung decided to honor her in 2018. They chose to rename the “Bullenwinkel” as Maria-von-Maltzan-Platz. This small square now stands as a testament to her bravery. Maria-von-Maltzan-Platz reminds us of her compassion.
