“Did anyone bring a compass?” a child’s voice might have once piped up here in Decker Prairie. This seemingly ordinary patch of land, about 30 miles northwest of Houston, holds a history as vast as the Texas sky. Decker Prairie, you see, is named for a man named Isaac Decker. He was a true pioneer, receiving a land grant in the 1830s when Texas was still young. Imagine him surveying his 177 acres, dreaming of the future. Life here wasn’t always peaceful. Decker Prairie saw the echoes of the Civil War. A Confederate powder mill operated near Spring Creek, but tragedy struck in 1863 when an explosion destroyed the mill, taking three lives. Today, a monument stands as a solemn reminder of this event. Decker Prairie persevered. Families built their lives here, farmers worked the land, and children attended a small schoolhouse that served the community until the mid-20th century. The area might look different now, but the spirit of those early settlers lives on in the very soil of Decker Prairie.
