Established in 1954, Capital Normal University holds a prominent place in Beijing’s educational landscape. The university’s name itself, Capital Normal University, reflects its mission. “Normal” signifies its historical role in training teachers, instilling in them the norms of pedagogy and curriculum. The roots of Capital Normal University trace back even further, to the Tongzhou Teachers School founded in 1905. Over the decades, several institutions merged with Capital Normal University, enriching its academic offerings and contributing to its growth. These include parts of North China Renmin University, Beijing Workers and Peasants Normal College, Beijing Art Normal College, and Beijing Normal Vocational School. In 1992, the Branch Campus of Beijing Normal University joined, further solidifying the university’s standing. Capital Normal University continued to expand, absorbing institutions like Beijing Union University Foreign Languages Normal School, Beijing Third Normal School, Tongzhou Normal School, and Beijing Preschool Normal School. Today, Capital Normal University boasts a sprawling urban campus encompassing 88 hectares. The university comprises eight campuses, strategically located along Beijing’s Third Ring Road. The southern campus serves as the headquarters. Here, the majority of academic programs thrive. Other campuses house specialized colleges, such as the College of International Culture on the North 1 campus and the College of Information Engineering on the North 2 campus. Capital Normal University has a vast network of international partnerships. It has established cooperation agreements with 193 foreign universities across 32 countries and regions. The university also hosts Confucius Institutes worldwide, fostering cultural exchange and language learning. These institutes can be found in prestigious universities such as St. Petersburg State University, the University of Minnesota, the University of Venice, the University of Piura, the State University of New York at Buffalo, and Bremen University of Science & Technology. Capital Normal University also welcomes a diverse student body, with approximately 2,000 international students each year. The university has a strong faculty with over 1,500 full-time teachers. Among them are renowned experts and scholars with significant influence in their fields. The university’s notable alumni include prominent figures like Wang Hairong, grand-niece of Mao Zedong, as well as the popular ballad singer Pu Shu, and the renowned history teacher Yuan Tengfei. Capital Normal University is more than just a university. It’s a vibrant hub of learning, research, and cultural exchange, contributing significantly to Beijing’s academic and intellectual landscape.
